History of the Society

It was started in 1992 by S.P Ramchander (the late husband of Ms Ranjana Ramchander, the present General Secretary of the Society) himself a PWH, who died in 1999. Dr Cecil Ross, MD of the St John’s Medical College Hospital Bangalore offered his professional help and both Ramchander and Dr Ross built it up from the scratch. They took dynamic steps such as training the local medical professional and sending doctors to international conference on hemophilia care organized by World Federation of Hemophilia etc. Within a few years the society came of age with quality assay testing for hemophilia done at the pathology laboratory of St John’s Medical Hospital under Dr Prema Damodar and . Dr Subba Rao of the Paediatric department providing the required care and treatment for our young patients. Efforts were taken to obtain medicines from Hemophilia Federation, New Delhi. Those were also trying times as factors were scarce and patients had to take blood products for which they had to pay a heavy price later.
The society which had a handful of members in 1992 has about 600 members on date. The Bangalore Chapter is one among many in India affiliated to Hemophilia Federation, India (HFI), New Delhi which in turn is a recognized body under World Federation of Hemophilia, Montreal, Canada.
The Society, registered with the Govt. of Karnataka is run by people mostly from the families of PWH or themselves afflicted with the disorder, conducts periodic elections and its executive and other committee members meet regularly and its accounts are audited as required under the law.

The Society functions at Bhagwan Mahaveer Jain Hospital (Basement-Physiotherapy Wing), Millers Road, Vasanth Nagar, Bangalore-560052 on all week days from 9.30 AM to 4.30 PM.
